Part I – Chasing the Wind

Part I – Chasing the Wind

legs Just five days ago, I returned from a Global Outreach visit to Huánuco, Peru.  Along with a hundred or so sand fly bites and a nasty case of Cholera, I returned with some eye-opening lessons on life from a third world country.  They might surprise you as they have certainly surprised me!

As we entered the small community of Tomayquichua, we were all consumed by the impoverished conditions.  Such a difficult and simple existence seemed harsh and unimaginable to most of us in our group.  Tomayquichua is a poor, agrarian community that relies heavily on crops to provide its people with sustenance and meager incomes.  I was reminded of Ecclesiastes 1:13:  “What a heavy burden God has laid on men.”  The people of this arid region work hard to cultivate their crops without the modern conveniences of irrigation systems, tractors, or large combines.  It is by the sweat of their brow and through painful toil that they eat their food.

Yet, we believe ourselves better off than the Peruvians.  While so much of what we strive for in the US—our work, possessions, and pleasures are futile—like chasing after wind.  Are our lives really better?

In the next 2-3 posts, I will share what I have learned from this short visit with some precious children!  I will also experiment with a few fun podcasts to share some additional stories and experiences that I think you will find amusing!  I hope you will be encouraged and challenged as you read along…Part II coming tomorrow!
